Application of EMC Directive and/or Vehicle Regulation

Application of EMC Directive and/or Vehicle Regulation to after-market equipment

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on the following question: whether equipment sold as after-market equipment needs type approval in accordance with Regulation (EC) 661/2009 as amended (UNECE Regulation 10) or falls within the scope of Directive 2014/30/EU (the EMC Directive).

This document, which is not a legally binding document in the sense of a legal act, was endorsed by the EMC Working Party.

The conclusions of this document are also reflected in Section 1.1.3 of the EMC Guide.

Article 1 of Directive 2014/30/EU provides that if the EMC requirements for equipment are wholly or partly laid down more specifically by other EU Directives, the EMC Directive shall not apply or shall cease to apply.

The Radio Equipment Directive does not include a similar exception, hence the Table below does not make reference to the RED Directive.

Components sold as aftermarket equipment, intended for the installation in motor vehicles and which are not subject to type approval, shall meet the essential requirements of Directive 2014/30/EU in addition to the relevant/appropriate requirements of the EMC Vehicle legislation; to assist manufacturers, the references of harmonised standard(s) , addressing these requirements, are listed in the EU Official Journal under 2014/30/EU

This Table provides guidance on whether equipment sold as after-market equipment needs type approval in accordance with the Regulation (EC) 661/2009 as amended (UNECE Regulation 10) or falls within the scope of the EMC Directive:
